Gedong Lawang Sewu

January 1, 2012

Gedong Lawang Sewu is one of few historical buildings in Semarang that have been preserved for decades. Built by the Dutch in the early 20th century for the public train headquarter, it underwent many functional changes, including torture cells by the Japanese Army during the second world war. Now it is mainly empty, yet its presence reminds me of the long history of colonialism experienced by Indonesia.
